Steven Tyler, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, charismatic front man and lead singer of Aerosmith, has somehow landed in the seat of “Talent Judge” on American Idol. This move can only punctuate the seen it all – done it all – mantra he has to have. However, American Idol is the fast food of music entertainment where corporations perfectly craft both interest and product; cookie cutter celebrity, immediately ready for public consumption. To others, American Idol is the Holy Grail of mindless entertainment. You have to hand it to Simon – pretty nice business model. But Steven Tyler – the bad boy from Boston? Say it ain’t so Steve!
For the record and to substantiate the seen it all – done it all claim, I submit the following, Steven has: (take deep breath) been included among Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers, ranked 3rd on Hit Parader’s Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Aerosmith, played at the Super Bowl XXXV Halftime Show, received an honorary degree from Berklee College of Music, an honorary doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Boston and in 2008 Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was released. Aerosmith has played on Saturday Night Live and the Simpsons and Tyler himself has appeared in the movies: Be Cool, The Polar Express, Wayne’s World and a handful of sitcoms. Tyler has toured and traveled the world, fell of stages, has had medical challenges, designed motorcycles, married multiple times, children, grandchild, battled drug use, gotten clean and relapsed and gotten clean again. (OK exhale)
But to those who still hold on to such classics as “Dream On”, “Sweet Emotion’, “Walk This Way”, “Mama Kin”, “Train kept a Rollin'” and “Back in the Saddle” and who listened to “Rocks” and “Toys in the Attic” on vinyl, this is just plain crazy. Steven Tyler being a judge on American Idol? But isn’t the shock lessened when we remember the relationship between Aerosmith and MTV? This is where Aerosmith became more of a heavy pop rock ballad band (sorry Joe Perry). And remember, it was Aerosmith who on MTV did the unthinkable when “Walk This Way” became the breakthrough crossover Rock/Rap song.
OK, so let’s put this all together. Bad boy from Boston makes good in a mega successful heavy rock band and is able to reinvent himself over the years, has tons of initiative AND ties colorful scarves to microphone stands. Now, he has a chance to gain more attention and become accessible to a wider audience, so why not?
In conclusion it is just as acceptable for an attention loving charismatic guy to undertake a completely new adventure as it is for someone else to look at it all and say, “what a load.”
