History

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, is the person responsible for giving the name. His nickname was “Teddy”. On November 14, 1902, Roosevelt invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino was helping settle a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana. He attended a bear hunt with several other hunters in Mississippi during his spare time. After a long exhausting chase with hounds, a suite of Roosevelt’s attendants cornered, clubbed, and tied an American black bear to a willow tree. Roosevelt came upon the wounded young bear and ordered the mercy killing of the animal, uttered the immortal words, “Spare the bear! I will not shoot a tethered animal.” The Washington Post ran an editorial cartoon called “Drawing the Line in Mississippi” which is created by the political cartoonist Clifford K. Berryman on November 16, 1902. This incident illustrated the event. The cartoon depicted both state line dispute and the bear hunt.

In the drawing of Berryman, the bear was drawn as a fierce animal where the bear had just killed a hunting dog. But later, Berryman redrew the bear and he made it a cuddly cub. The cartoon became popular and Morris Michtom saw the drawing of Roosevelt and the bear cub. And then he was inspired to create a new toy for children called the teddy bear. Michtom owned a small novelty and candy store in Brooklyn, New York. Michtom sent Roosevelt a bear which was made for sale in their store and asked permission to use the teddy bear name. Roosevelt said yes. A company called Butler Brothers and Michtom began to mass-produce the teddy bear. Within a year Michtom started his own company called the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company. At the same time in Germany a firm called Steiff firm produced a stuffed bear from Richard Steiff’s designs. In March 1903, at the Leipzig Toy Fair, Steiff exhibited the toy in an exhibition. Hermann Berg who was a buyer for George Borgfeldt & Company in New York saw the toy. He ordered 3000 to be sent to the United States. There were many unusual teddy bears also introduced at that time such that a “Laughing Roosevelt Bear” was designed to reproduce President Roosevelt’s toothy grin, an “Electric Eye” bear had a mechanism in its stomach that, when pressed, activated lights in its eyes, a self-whistling bear produced a whistling sound when it was turned upside down and back upright again and so on. Teddy bear images became visible on many other consumer goods, including baby rattles, automobile accessories, jigsaw puzzles, greeting cards, postcards, cover for some hot water bottles, some clothes printed by some textile mills and so on. John W. Bratton composed “The Teddy Bear Two-Step,” to become famous later as the tune for “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic” in 1907 which is given below: “If you go down to the woods today You’re sure of a big surprise If you go down to the woods today You better go in disguise For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain because Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic If you go down to the woods today You’re sure of a big surprise If you go down to the woods today You better go in disguise For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain because Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic At six o’clock their mummys and daddys will take them home to bed Because they’re tired little teddy bears”
